The MIC 360 is an in-process diameter gage that measures internal and external diameters of machined parts up to 100 feet, while they are rotating at speeds up to 360 SFM. Measurement accuracies, traceable to NIST, are ±.0002" on diameters under 12", ±.001" on diameters up to 240", and ±.002" on diameters up to 360".
The gage head assembly of the unit contains a 3 3/4” diameter hardened steel precision gage wheel that rotates around a part and measures the diameter. The versatile gage head comes with either a standard 1 ¼” square shank or several optional quick-change tool shanks that allow it to mount on a variety of machine types such as, vertical or horizontal lathes, mills, and grinders. At the core of the gage head is a high-resolution rotary encoder that counts the revolutions of the gage wheel as it rotates around a work piece.
To keep track of the number of times the part rotates, the MIC 360 includes an optical target that is mounted on the machine’s chuck and an optical light switch that is mounted on the machine’s base. Each time the target passes the light switch, the light switch signals the gage head encoder when to start and stop measuring the work piece, based on the number of preset revolutions.
These measurement values are stored in the gage head until the gage head’s antenna transmits the values to the infrared receiving unit, by infrared signal. The infrared receiving unit reports the measurement values to the CPU where the diameter is calculated and displayed on CPU’s digital readout. The CPU includes the MIC 360 Diameter Measurement program, which allows setting the parameters for the gage and monitoring diameter measurements as a part rotates.
